With yesterday being the 29th of February it was that rare occasion where traditionally women are allowed to pop the question. Of course, nowadays more and more women feel free to propose whatever year it is, but legend has it that only on a leap year would it be acceptable for a lady to get down on one knee.
The origins of the legend are unclear, although some believe the tradition began in 5th Century Ireland, when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait far too long for men to propose. The story goes that St. Patrick decreed that women could propose on the last day of February during a leap year. Other legends state that in 1288 in Scotland it was made legal for women to propose to men on a leap year only, and in the 1800’s special marriage proposal cards were produced for women to give to their intended.
